17 Again topped the box office with an estimated $24.1 million from over 3,000 theaters, edging out other notable films that were expected to hit it well in their maiden showing. Blessed with the lead of Zac Efron who already has an established following thanks to his performance on High School Musical, it is not surprising that his first solo movie debut would end up bringing New Line/Warner Bros a record breaking film.

New Line/Warner Bros.’ 17 Again took over the box office with an estimated $24.1 million from 3,255 theaters. Starring Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Thomas Lennon, Michelle Trachtenberg and Matthew Perry, the comedy averaged $7,393 per location. In the film, Efron and Perry play a middle-aged loser whose marriage has fallen apart and whose kids don’t respect him, and he’s been wondering if he made the right decision by marrying his then girlfriend Scarlett (Mann) right out of school. After being forced to crash with his high school friend Ned (Lennon), Mike is magically transformed back to the age of 17 and gets to go back to high school and make different decisions the second time around.

17 Again did better than other movies that came out which included “State of Play” ($14.1M), “Monsters vs. Aliens” ($12.9M) and “Hannah Montana the Movie” ($12.7M).

17 Again Remakes 18 Again from 1988

April 5, 2009 - 5:51 am No Comments

This movie obviously got its idea from the 1988 hit 18 Again which starred George Burns. Although carrying a different storyline, the similarity cannot be denied but 17 Again promises to be one heck of a comedy to watch.

Synopsis:
What would you do if you got a second shot at life? Class of 1989, Mike O’Donnell is a star on his high school basketball court with a college scout in the stands and a bright future in his grasp. But instead, he decides to throw it all away to share his life with his girlfriend Scarlett and the baby he just learned they are expecting. Almost 20 years later, Mike’s glory days are decidedly behind him. His marriage to Scarlett has fallen apart, he has been passed over for a promotion at work, his teenage kids think he is a loser, and he has been reduced to crashing with his high school nerd-turned-techno-billionaire best friend Ned. But Mike is given another chance when he is miraculously transformed back to the age of 17. Unfortunately, Mike may look 17 again, but his thirtysomething outlook is totally uncool in the class of 2009. And in trying to recapture his best years, Mike could lose the best things that ever happened to him.
