Another Celebrity Auction…Sans the Class

This past May, two months ago, the charming and modest actor/singer Rob Pattinson was asked to donate a kiss. The request was made at the Cannes Film Festival, where producer Harvey Weinstein was emceeing a benefit to raise funds for amFAR Cinema Agaist AIDS. Rob actually agreed to donate two kisses, and those chaste and generous kisses on the cheek auctioned for 20,000 euros, or about $56,000 apiece.
Now another celebrity is auctioning her favors. Well, she’s not auctioning them to the buyer, it’s more like the record of favors to an old boyfriend, but you can buy them and listen to the obscene answering maching messages she left for long-ago boyfriend Jim Albright, or read the faxes she sent to him detailing what she was doing by herself, and what she would be doing if he were there. There’s also a video “of an intimate nature” involved in the auction, too.
This auction isn’t for anyone’s benefit but the seller’s. No good cause is going to get anything from it.
So…on the one hand we have Rob Pattinson raking in over $112,000 for two sweet kisses on the cheek, and the money going to fund AIDS research, and on the other we have Madonna, whose phone calls, videos and faxes are expected to total under $40,000, which will go to benefit…nobody at all.
Does it pay to have some class? Does it make the world a better place? You decide.
