The end of the world is at hand. This is the main theme insinuated in the film 2012. The movie became an instant blockbuster pocketing more than 64 million dollars just this past weekend. The special effects were superb, giving a realistic depiction of the ultimate earthquake, the ultimate volcanic eruption, and the ultimate tsunami – making it the ultimate disaster movie!

All hell breaks loose as Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) tries to get his family to survive as California begins to fall into utter chaos. A whole city falls apart as they try to outrun a quake that literally tears the earth asunder. They soon found out that “…it’s not just California, the whole goddamn world is falling apart.” Other story lines branch out apart from Jackson’s. This is where the movie failed, methinks. Aside from the realistic effects and admirable cinematography, the script is filled with clutters. I’d even call some scenes to be inappropriate. But you can actually do away with the negative stuff because of the overwhelming portrayal of mother nature’s rage.

By segments, especially the CGI ones, the film kept me on the edge of my seat. I had goosebumps on almost every suspense part. This is why the movie was a great success. Yeah, it’s special effects driven, not fueled by a superstar or a superscript. I found myself being a member of club composed of millions of people who are anxious on what’s going to happen in the real year 2012. NASA will be doing a lot of explaining because of this one.
