Fast and Furious roars with lead in weekend US box office
No chance for Mr. and Mr. Smith over the weekend in US cinemas.
By Sunday, Vin Diesel and his sixth installment in the Fast & Furious series kept its lead from last week with a box office take of 34.5 million dollars, for a two-week gross of 170 million dollars.
Left in the dust were Now You See Me, a mysterious bank robbery romp, and Will and son Jaden Smith’s science fiction After Earth, which debuted in second and third place.
Star Trek into Darkness dropped from third to fifth place in its third week, taking in 16.4 million dollars for a total of 181 million dollars to date. It was shot on a 190-million-dollar budget.
Iron Man 3, with 8 million dollars, and The Great Gatsby, with 6.3 million dollars, held 7th and 8th place.
Iron Man 3 has already grossed 384.8 million dollars since it opened five weeks ago – nearly double its 200-million-dollar budget. (dpa)
