Twilight Saga holds atop North American box office for third week
Washington (dpa) – Two movies debuted over the weekend in North American cinemas, but the top three spots in a ranking based on ticket sales remained unchanged, according to an estimate of weekend ticket sales reported Sunday.
The three movies that led weekend sales were The Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn Part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln, according to the website boxofficemojo.com. It was the third straight week they held those positions.
The two new nationwide releases were Killing Them Softly, which debuted at seventh with an estimated 7 million dollars in ticket sales, and The Collection, which was 10th with an estimatd 3.4 million dollars in ticket sales.
The Twilight Saga movie has held the top spot since its debut three weeks ago. Sales for the fifth and final Twilight movie were down 60 per cent over the weekend, but it still grossed 17.4 million dollars.
Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond movie, was a close second this weekend raking in an estimated 17 million dollars, which is down 52 per cent from last weekend. In third was Lincoln, which sold 13.5 million dollars worth of tickets, down 47 per cent from last weekend.
Box Office Mojo reported that on the strength of the top three movies, the top 12 in the ranking earned an estimated 107.5 million dollars over the weekend, which is up 46 per cent from the corresponding weekend last year.
