Manila, Philippines – PHILIPPINE ‘TWILIGHT’ ­ In the “Twilight“ movies a handsome vampire falls in love with a lovely human.

The “Philippine version“ of “Twilight“ ­ if it can be called that ­ sees a breathtakingly beautiful witch, portrayed by Lovi Poe, falling in love with a good-looking assassin, played by Paulo Avelino.

But let it be said that but for the romantic angle, “Aswang’s“ plot is very different from “Twilight’s.“

The witch in the Lovi Poe starrer is “abwak,“ hawkman, the story at once gripping and fascinating, romantic and realistic.

Director Jerrold Tarog wrote “Aswang“ in collaboration with Aloy Adlawan. Jerrold also wrote the musical score.

• MISUNDERSTANDING
­ An additional sexy scene in “Aswang“ initially irked Lovi, causing a misunderstanding with Regal producer Mother Lily Monteverde. Lovi felt it was too sexy and not really needed. But Mother Lily saw it otherwise.

Direk Jerrold explained he’d shot the sexy scene with Paulo tastefully, artistically. But then that’s what they all say.

When Lovi saw the rough cut of “Aswang,“ Lovi understood Mother Lily’s point. It made her character more “human,“ with deep human needs. She falls in love with a man and develops the urge to make love like, well, a human being.

All’s well that ends well. Lovi and Mother Lily are in good terms again. That is even if Lovi still feels the scene is too sexy for her taste.

With Lovi and Paulo in “As wang“ are Joem Bascon, Jillian Ward, Precious Lara Quigaman, Nina Jose, Marc Abaya, Bembol Roco, and introducing Albie Casino.
