Viewers are not dumb, says Mareng Winnie
MANILA, Philippines — With her reputation as a hard-hitting intellectual, TV host and UP professor Winnie Monsod may be someone credibly qualified to look down on stupid people.
But think again. She finds televiewers, regardless of status, as essentially a reflection of herself: Not dumb and cannot be fooled.
This, she insisted when a reporter asked if she has a way of dealing with not-so-sharp audiences.
In a chat with scribes discussing her new TV show, she stated, “It would be unfair to think we have a dumb audience. They’re not dumb. The explanation is just not clear.”
Monsod, a teacher of Economics since 1963, is hosting a show that should be bad news to corrupt and incompetent public officials. The title itself says it all: “Bawal Ang Pasaway Kay Mareng Winnie.”
The no-holds barred talk show, wherein the noted lecturer gets to analyze sensitive issues, will be aired on GMA News TV (which replaced QTV) beginning March 2, 8 p.m., and every Wednesday thereafter.
Asked how she appears composed on TV, the commentator related, “More often I completely forget that there is a camera because I’m so engrossed in the conversation.”
Known for her unstoppable ways, Monsod added, “I never censor myself!”
Meanwhile, another respected figure in journalism presents an equally spicy show on the same channel. Malou Mangahas, executive director of Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), is hosting “Investigative Documentaries,” which will discuss corruption and anomalies of public interest.
To be aired on Thursdays, 8 p.m., beginning March 3, the said program puts on TV a group of veteran news people, including Ed Lingao of PCIJ, Marites Vitug of “Newsbreak,” and Grace dela Peña-Reyes of GMA News Operations.
