ABC Television has tapped former “Friends” creator, Marta Kauffman, to turn the story of the Time Traveler’s Wife into a weekly television show.

The story, based on a book by Audrey Niffenegger, is running in theaters this week and has been having quite a successful run. The movie stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams and has already earned more than $20 in the first few days following its opening.

The book has been a best seller since its publishing in 2003. It revolves around the story of a man who suffers from a genetic disorder, resulting in this ability to time travel. He meets and marries a woman who has to contend with his “disappearances”  testing the boundaries of their relationship.

The TV project has apparently been in discussion for years now, with Marta Kauffman tasked to write the script as well as serve as its executive producer.

It would be interesting to see how this turns out for television, but the thing is, it’s been done. Or at least something like it. Two season’s ago, NBC came up with “Journeyman”, a story about a journalist who has suddenly come to grasp with his ability to time travel, much to his wife’s disappointment.  It didn’t even succeed in securing a full season run, viewers just didn’t get it when it had a very engaging premise.

Here’s hoping this new project by Kauffman doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Marta Kauffman is one of the three forces behind the worldwide hit series, “Friends” which she co-wrote and executive produced. I’d really like to see her stuff on television again.
