Is there no such thing as a superstar anymore?
If box office results are to be analyzed, it seems that the likes of Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt — A-Listers all — are no longer bringing in the star power they used to have in terms of bringing a big pack of audience together on opening day. Recent movies starring these power houses shown in theaters lately have returned less than fantastic results. It seems, according to this article, that a superstar’s bright shining light is already diminishing. Who or what is to be blamed for all of this?
One factor seems to point to the rising trend and influx of reality TV stars all taking a piece of their 15 minutes in the…uh, fame pie. Everyone’s looking out for the next big sensation, only for that new sensation to be quickly replaced by another new sensation just a few weeks after. Fame has indeed become fleeting. It’s no longer hard to attain, unlike before. And the quickest way to get to this is by becoming a reality TV subject. These “celebrities” all too well know how fleeting it is, too. They milk their appearances all their worth until we would want to puke them out of our system.
Another factor seems to be viral marketing. People with their iPhones, Blackberries, Twitters and Facebook, can immediately feedback on what’s out there to watch. You don’t have to wait for reviews from critics to be able to judge whether or not a movie is worth your time. You only have to wait for your friends to send you a text message from inside the movie house and you’ve got an answer right there.
Perhaps in the future, “obscurity” is the next big superstar.
