Heathers was a cult movie from the 80’s that launched Winona Ryder’s star status. Christian Slater was the actor who played opposite her character and the movie reflected teen angst in the most bizarre of instances. It was a celebrated dark comedy, something which we never have enough of in entertainment lately.

Variety is now reporting this landmark film is going to be developed for television by Fox and Sony Pictures. The TV remake will be adapted by scribes Mark Rizzo and Jenny Bicks. All characters from the movie are expected to be in this updated version, especially Veronica (Ryder’s character) and JD (Slater’s character).

The idea for a “Heathers” revival came from inside UTA, where reps for Rizzo and Bicks decided the title was ripe for revival and contacted Lakeshore about potentially dusting off the franchise.

For Lakeshore, the project, which is in the script stage at Fox, reps its introduction to the world of TV.

“We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times,” said Lakeshore prexy Gary Lucchesi. “But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”

The movie was originally written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehman. In the film, Shannen Doherty also starred as one of the Heathers.

With so many teen-centric TV programs today, I think this remake is going to be relevant and much anticipated. I hope they don’t screw it up.
