Ron Howard Invites Critics to View Film

Posted by kathy

Ron Howard is one of the most successful directors in Hollywood, and he really wishes his critics would remember that.  If they did, they might not object to him making movies that set out to offend about 1.2 billion people.

To be fair, it’s really the books by Dan Brown that many Catholics object to.  The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons (due for film release next month) are works of fiction that assume the historicity of certain legends about the Catholic Church–legends that don’t have an ounce of proof to substantiate them, but which don’t make the Church look very good.

But Howard insists that Catholics will like his movie (indeed, many Catholics do enjoy both Brown’s books and the movies made from them), because no anti-Catholicism is intended, and because it’s “an exciting mystery, set in the awe-inspiring beauty of Rome.”

Maybe.  But if Howard doesn’t want people to object to his films, he should stop choosing material that so many people find objectionable.  Otherwise, he should suck it up and deal with the criticism.

Either you make the movies you want to make and let the chips fall where they fall, or you make movies that everyone will like.  I don’t see how you can have it both ways.
